Hay girl, hay: Wild horses for adoption at Idaho Horse Expo

Taking place April 5-7, the Idaho Horse Expo is an opportunity for folks to adopt the weanlings that were handled by 4-H youth.

NAMPA, Idaho — The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) partnered with University of Idaho Extension 4-H program to offer wild horse weanlings for adoption during the 2024 Idaho Horse Expo, according to a news release.

Taking place April 5-7, the Idaho Horse Expo is an opportunity for folks to adopt the weanlings that were handled by 4-H youth. The 4-H youth have been training the weanlings, and their training progress was put on display back in March.

The Idaho Horse Expo will have public viewing of the horses April 5-7, with the competitive bid adoption taking place on Sunday, April 7 at 1:15 p.m.

Kids from seven different Treasure Valley 4-H clubs picked up the young horses in late February, and have been working to train the animals since then. All the horses were previously considered wild, and were gathered from Idaho's rangelands in the Owyhee Front.

In order to adopt, people must be at least 18 years old and have facilities that meet BLM's requirements, the news release stated. The title for the animal will remain with the federal government for one year. After that, adopters are able to apply for the title. More information about adoption guidelines can be found at the BLM website.
