Boise State point guard Roddie Anderson III enters transfer portal

Boise State's list of returning starters is down to Tyson Degenhart and O'Mar Stanley. Anderson averaged 6.5 points per game after transferring from UC San Diego.

BOISE, Idaho — Boise State point guard Roddie Anderson III on Tuesday announced he is entering the transfer portal after one season in the City of Trees.

Anderson averaged 6.5 points, 3.0 rebounds, 2.4 assists and 1.2 steals as a sophomore this past season, starting in 27 games and appearing in each of the Broncos' 33 contests. He scored 14 points in the First Four matchup with Colorado in the NCAA Tournament.

The 6-foot-3, 190-pound guard transferred to Boise State from UC San Diego prior to the season. His 15.8 points per game in conference play led all freshman in the Big West, setting up high expectations with the Broncos.

"Thank you to all my teammates for trusting me and having my back no matter what. You guys will always be my brothers and I would go to war for any of you," Anderson said on social media. "I would like to thank Coach Rice and the rest of the coaching staff for brining me me to Boise and treating me like family."

Anderson's decision comes after Boise State landed former San Jose State point guard Alvaro Cardenas out of the transfer portal earlier this month. Cardenas ranked third in assists-to-turnover ratio (2.67) and fourth in assists per game (5.52) in the Mountain West.

Tyson Degenhart and O'Mar Stanley are the Broncos' only returning starters after Anderson's announcement. Senior guard Chibuzo Agbo on Monday announced his commitment to USC, and Max Rice finished his collegiate career this spring.

Boise State now has four available scholarships. Kobe Young, Jace Whiting and walk-on Kade Rice also entered the transfer portal this offseason. Whiting committed to UNLV on April 16.

Anderson scored at least 10 points in Boise State's final three games and averaged 8.4 points per game across the final 13 contests of the season. The Huntington Beach native had his best performance in a ranked win at San Diego State, totaling 16 points, six rebounds, three assists and two steals.
