Bus driver cited in Highway 55 crash

The bus was carrying 28 youth campers and staff back to Boise from the Treasure Valley YMCA’s camp in August 2023 when it crashed, injuring several passengers.

BANKS, Idaho — The driver of the school bus that crashed on Highway 55 while carrying YMCA campers in August 2023, was issued a traffic citation for driving too fast for conditions, according to Boise County Prosecutor's Office.

Prosecuting Attorney Alex F. Sosa confirmed additional charges are unlikely due to insufficient probable cause following the investigation by Idaho State Police (ISP).

In September, ISP investigators determined the crash occurred after the driver of the bus veered off the road and overcorrected, causing it to roll over. ISP said the driver of the bus was a 64-year-old woman from Caldwell.

The single-vehicle crash resulted in eight serious injuries, according to ISP. The driver was among those injured.

The crash occurred around 3 p.m. on Aug. 4 on Highway 55 at milepost 84, north of Banks. The bus was carrying 28 teen campers and staff back to Boise from the Treasure Valley YMCA's summer camp at Horsethief Reservoir when it crashed. The ages of the teenagers on board range from 13 to 18.

Every teen on the bus, injured or not, was transported to a local hospital "in an abundance of caution," ISP said. Three days later, nearly all the children involved had been released from the hospital to their families.
