MING Studios named as Boise's newest cultural ambassador

The cultural ambassador shares the city's cultural and creative community with other cities across the globe.

BOISE, Idaho — Boise's newest cultural ambassador will be MING Studios, the mayor's office announced on Tuesday.

MING Studios is an international contemporary art center and residency program located on 6th Street in downtown Boise.

According to the city, the MING Studios will represent Boise as its cultural ambassador for the fiscal years 2020 and 2021, continuing ongoing efforts to bring innovative contemporary work to Boise from around the world.

"MING Studios embodies the concept of 'ambassador' and will be a stellar representative and supporter of our city's unique culture everywhere they go," Mayor Dave Bieter said in a statement. "We are fortunate to have MING Studios in our city and applaud them for their ambitious work."

Since its creation in 2014, MING Studios has welcomed artists from around the world and the nation through its artist-in-residency program. The organization also serves as host to many local artists and cultural organizations, helping to connect them.

Boise's cultural ambassador program is designed to share the city's cultural and creative community with other cities across the globe and foster connection to global audiences.

Also on Tuesday, Bieter named 2019's recipients for the Mayor's Awards for Excellence in Arts and History. Presented every two years, the awards celebrate people, organizations, and businesses that have contributed to Boise's cultural community.

This year's recipients are:

  • Arts - Randy Van Dyck
  • History - Idaho Black History Museum
  • Lifetime Achievement - Tom Tompkins

The mayor's awards recipients and the cultural ambassador will be honored at a free public ceremony at 5:30 p.m. on September 5 at City Hall Plaza.
