Boise Police identify officer who shot suspect in Idaho deputy's death

The Boise Police Department released the identity of the officer who shot Dennis Mulqueen, the man suspected of killing the 27-year-old deputy during a traffic stop.

BOISE, Idaho — The Boise police officer who shot and killed the 65-year-old suspect who fatally shot an Ada County Sheriff's deputy just hours prior, was identified by the department Friday.

The Boise Police Department (BPD) said officer J. Sontag shot and killed Dennis Mulqueen, of Boise, the man suspected of killing Ada County Sheriff's Office Deputy Tobin Bolter, 27, during a traffic stop on Saturday, April 20. Sontag has been an officer for 18 years and has been with the department for nine of those years.

As previously reported, the Ada County Sheriff's Office (ACSO) said Dep. Bolter had a vehicle pulled over near West Overland Road and North Raymond Street just before 9 p.m. when the suspect in the vehicle shot him in the neck and drove off.

BPD said Mulqueen's vehicle was found near South Dorian and West Roosevelt streets around 9:30 p.m., but no one was inside.

Officers said they eventually located the suspect nearby on South Jackson Street outside a home and tried to get him to surrender.

Shortly after midnight, officers said the suspect opened fire on them, and that is when Boise police officer Sontag returned fire and shot him. He was taken to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The coroner said Mulqueen died from a gunshot wound in the chest at Saint Alphonsus Hospital early Sunday morning, hours after Dep. Bolter had been killed.

In a news conference, police said although he did have a $3,000 warrant out for his arrest, they do not know why he shot the deputy. Police said he had a handgun in his possession.

Police are asking the public for information on Mulqueen. Those with information are asked to call Ada County Dispatch at 208-377-6790 and ask to speak with a Boise police detective.
