Brisk morning to start Thursday, with lingering spotty showers

The daily forecast from Idaho's largest, most experienced team of meteorologists.

BOISE, Idaho — A weak disturbance trekking across eastern Oregon and southern Idaho early Wednesday triggered spring snow in the high terrain, coating Bogus Basin along with portions of Highway 55 in Valley County, and sending flurries into places like Horseshoe Bend before sunrise. Snow showers continued to pop in the mountains throughout the day today, but accumulations were quite light. A few strikes of lightning were spotted near Richfield, but other than that, thunderstorm activity was limited this afternoon.

The valleys stayed mostly dry but very cool for May 1st. Spotty showers filtered through some Treasure Valley areas at times producing light rain, graupel, and hail. Boise capped at just 56° this afternoon under a partly sunny sky, though it felt much chiller at times with the brisk northwest winds and cloud cover.

Tomorrow morning, temperatures will get close to frost/freezing for eastern Treasure Valley spots and the Magic Valley. There's even a FREEZE WARNING in place for eastern parts of the Magic Valley, as temperatures could get as low as 24° there overnight. If you did some planting over the weekend and can move some of those plants inside, it's a good opportunity to try and save them the stress of those colder temperatures.

Temps remain cooler than normal until Friday, which is when we'll finally rebound back closer to normal with abundant sunshine to wrap the work week. However, cool and breezy winds will continue to pop up throughout the extended period as we've got multiple high- and-low pressure systems coming and going that will keep our pressure gradient pretty tight for the next several days.

Over the weekend, get ready for some 'weather whiplash' as we've got a mild Saturday on tap ahead of a dramatic cooldown for Sunday, courtesy of a strong storm system that will dive south into the Pacific Northwest early in the weekend. Scattered rain showers are possible from late Saturday through Sunday, and high temps in Boise go from the low 70s on Saturday to just the mid-50s on Sunday, and will stay cooler than normal into the middle of next week.
