One more day of cool, unsettled weather before temps start to take off

The daily forecast from Idaho's largest, most experienced team of meteorologists.

BOISE, Idaho — Another cold front rolled across the Gem State late Monday into early Tuesday, triggering valley rain showers and continued light mountain snow. There isn't much moisture coming in behind the front, so just some isolated showers are possible during the day today, but a cold wind will quickly become the big weather headline for Tuesday as our surface pressure gradient tightens up behind the front. In the Treasure Valley, westerly winds could gust up to 45mph by this afternoon, and in the Magic Valley, a WIND ADVISORY is in effect from 12-9pm today for gusts up to 50mph, which can be damaging.

The cool air filtering in behind the front will lead to our chilliest day of the week, with temperatures climbing only into the mid-50s in the Treasure Valley, a good 15° cooler than normal for early May. A few lingering showers are possible throughout the day today, and even on Wednesday some occasional mountain snow showers are possible as we get some wraparound moisture from the western edge of a broad low-pressure system to our east.

Come Thursday, we kick off a welcome warming trend as a strong ridge of high pressure starts amplifying in from the west. This ridge will bring sunshine and unseasonably warm weather to the region, with portions of British Columbia and the Pacific Northwest possibly seeing record-setting warmth by this weekend. In SW Idaho, temperatures will skyrocket into the mid-70s by Friday and then into the 80s over Mother's Day weekend! This warmth is more typical of mid-June than mid-May and will be picture-perfect for any outdoor brunch or dinner plans that you're planning for Mom on Sunday.

And, good news for gardeners, it looks like the threat of frost could be gone after Wednesday, as morning lows by this weekend will warm into the 50s in Boise and should stay well above freezing long-term.
