I-84 in eastern Oregon reopened in both directions

The shutdown was due to unchained semi trucks blocking the road near milepost 224, as well as a number of other crashes and slideoffs.

Heavy snow and high winds forced officials to close dozens of state roads in eastern Oregon on Monday and Interstate 84 was shut down through the Columbia River Gorge, while blowing snow also closed a major road over the Cascade Mountains in Washington.

LA GRANDE, Ore. — Interstate 84 is now open in both directions in eastern Oregon after closing down Wednesday morning.

The closure stretched from Exit 216 east of Pendleton to Exit 265 near La Grande, but eastbound and westbound lanes are now open, according to the Oregon Department of Transportation.

ODOT reported the closure was due to unchained semi trucks blocking the road near milepost 224, as well as a number of other crashes and slideoffs.

The closure was expected to be "lengthy," and I-84 was closed in the area just before 11 a.m. and reopened around 5 p.m.

The section of highway has repeatedly closed and reopened over the last several days as winter weather and whiteout conditions made travel perilous.
