Boise State brings back Nate Potter, Demario Warren with title changes

Potter returns to coach tight ends and adds the title of co-offensive coordinator. Warren remains the cornerbacks coach, but will no longer coach special teams.

BOISE, Idaho — Head coach Spencer Danielson on Friday announced two members of Boise State's staff are returning in 2024, with both coaches seeing changes to their titles.

Demario Warren is coming back for a third season as the Broncos' cornerbacks coach, but will no longer coach the special teams. Warren became Boise State's special teams assistant prior to the 2023 campaign after the departure of Keith Bhonapha.

Bronco graduate Nate Potter is also returning as tight ends coach, while adding the title of co-offensive coordinator. Next fall will be Potter's seventh season as part of Boise State's coaching staff.

Potter served as the run game coordinator and tight ends coach the past two seasons. Danielson on Friday announced Potter will guide the offense alongside coordinator, associate head coach and quarterbacks coach Bush Hamdan.

After a rough start to the season against a gauntlet of high-powered offenses, Warren helped Boise State's cornerbacks develop throughout Mountain West play. A'Marion McCoy finished 50th nationally and fifth in the Mountain West with three interceptions.

In 2022, the Broncos led the Mountain West and ranked 14th in the country with 15 interceptions. Boise State also finished eighth nationally in team pass efficiency defense.

"I am so glad that Demario Warren is remaining on our staff here at Boise State," Danielson said. "I have come to know him as an elite teacher that is focused on developing young men in all areas of their lives. Additionally, his knowledge of the secondary and of defense in general is absolutely tremendous. With Demario back and Tyler Stockton joining the staff, I know our defense is poised to improve next year. I can't wait to get started with this staff in the new year."

Despite starting tight end Riley Smith dealing with injuries in 2023, Potter's position group did not allow a sack across 14 games and posted 275 yards and four touchdowns on 19 grabs. Redshirt junior Matt Lauter, who's production increased late this fall, will be back in 2024.

Boise State's tight ends allowed just one sack in 2022, while totaling 364 yards on 43 receptions. Potter served as a quality control assistant in 2014, before three seasons as an offensive graduate assistant. He coached tight ends at Montana State from 2019 to 2021.

Potter earned a spot in the Boise State Athletics Hall of Fame in 2018. He became the second consensus All-American in Bronco football history in 2011, joining Ryan Clady in 2007. Potter earned first team All-Mountain West honors in 2011 and was selected in the seventh round of the 2012 NFL Draft by the Arizona Cardinals.

"As an alumnus and an incredibly respected coach on all levels, it was important to work to keep Nate Potter on our staff and his new title reflects that," Danielson said. "He has done a wonderful job developing our tight ends and working with our run game. In just the past two years he has made an impact on this program. I'm so glad he will be staying at his alma mater and in the Treasure Valley."

Warren helped Boise State finish 22nd nationally in fourth down defense (.417) and 46th in red zone defense in 2023. Before the City of Trees, Warren was at Southern Utah for 14 seasons and served as the program's head coach for six years.

The Thunderbirds reached the FCS playoffs for the third time ever in 2017 under Warren after their second Big Sky Conference Championship in program history. Warren was Southern Utah's defensive coordinator prior to becoming head coach. He also coached the defensive backs from 2008 to 2013.

Boise State is yet to announce a linebackers coach to replace Danielson following his promotion, and the Broncos will have a new special teams coordinator. The coaching staff as of Friday is broken down below:

  • Spencer Danielson: Head coach
  • Erik Chinander: Defensive coordinator / defensive line
  • Bush Hamdan: Associate head coach / offensive coordinator / quarterbacks
  • Nate Potter: Co-offensive coordinator / tight ends
  • Tyler Stockton: Co-defensive coordinator / safeties
