Bush Hamdan to remain Boise State's offensive coordinator as Danielson builds staff

Former Bronco quarterback Bush Hamdan will remain as Boise State's offensive coordinator and added the title of associate head coach.

BOISE, Idaho — Former Boise State quarterback and first-year play caller Bush Hamdan is staying with the program under Spencer Danielson, the Broncos' head coach announced Wednesday

Hamdan will remain the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach, and also earned the title of associate head coach. His new contract is pending approval from the Idaho State Board of Education.

In his debut campaign guiding the offense, Boise State posted 30 or more points in nine-straight games, tied with Michigan and Texas for the nation's second-longest streak.

The Broncos also ranked sixth nationally with 214.8 rushing yards per game and third with an 80% conversion rate on fourth-down attempts. The Boise State offensive line has allowed just 1.08 sacks per outing entering Saturday's LA Bowl, which ranks 12th in the country.

The Boise State graduate is in his 15th year of coaching. He returned to the City of Trees in December 2022 after spending three years at Missouri, coaching wide receivers from 2020 to 2021 and quarterbacks from 2020 to 2022.

"Over the past year I have come to get to know Bush Hamdan, working closely with him," Danielson said. "In that time, he has shown that his knowledge of the game and creativity in calling plays is impressive. He and I both agree in the approach that our offense should always be opportunistic and on the attack. Asking Bush to stay was one of my first priorities in building this staff and I am incredibly excited that he will remain at Boise State."

Nine-straight performances with at least 30 points is the longest streak by a Boise State squad since 2011. Hamdan also guided sophomore running back Ashton Jeanty this fall as he posted head-turning numbers and joined Kellen Moore and Brett Rypien as the only Broncos to be named Mountain West Offensive Player of the Year.

Hamdan was a quarterback at Boise State from 2004 to 2008, before he started coaching as a student assistant in 2009 at Colorado. He was an offensive intern at Maryland the following year, then coached tight ends at Sacramento State in 2011.

After coaching wide receivers at Florida in 2012, Hamdan served as Arkansas State's co-offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach. During the 2013 campaign, the Red Wolves claimed the Sun Belt title and the GoDaddy Bowl.

He joined Chris Petersen as an offensive quality control coach at Washington in 2015 after calling the offense and coaching quarterbacks at Davidson. Hamdan was then promoted to wide receivers coach/pass game coordinator the Huskies' next season.

In 2018 and 2019, Hamdan served as the Huskies' quarterbacks coach and offensive coordinator, where Washington won the Pac-12 behind quarterback Jacob Eason. The Washington QB went on to be selected in the fourth round of the 2020 NFL Draft. Additionally, wide receiver John Ross III was drafted with the ninth overall pick the year after Hamdan coached the wideouts and coordinated Washington's pass game.

As if the climb up the coaching ladder and resume needed more fuel, Hamdan also served as the quarterbacks coach of the Atlanta Falcons in between stints in the Emerald City. The Falcons reached the divisional round of the 2017 NFC playoffs and Matt Ryan passed for more than 4,000 yards.

Hamdan and Boise State are in Southern California preparing to face UCLA in the 2023 Starco Brands LA Bowl Hosted By Gronk. The game kicks off Saturday at 5:30 p.m. MT (4:30 p.m. PT) and will be nationally televised on ABC.
