Sources: Kane Ioane departing Boise State to become defensive coordinator at Nevada

Boise State co-defensive coordinator and safeties coach Kane Ioane will serve as the DC on Jeff Choate's staff at Nevada, KTVB's Jay Tust confirmed on Tuesday.

BOISE, Idaho — Boise State co-defensive coordinator and safeties coach Kane Ioane is leaving the program to become the next defensive coordinator at Nevada, sources confirmed to KTVB Sports Director Jay Tust on Tuesday.

The move reunites Ioane with former Bronco assistant Jeff Choate, who was named the new Wolf Pack head football coach earlier this month. Ioane was the defensive coordinator on Choate's staff at Montana State when the Bobcats reached the semifinal round of the FCS playoffs in 2019.

Ioane has served in the same role since he was hired by former Boise State head coach Andy Avalos in January 2021. The 41-year-old, who was highly regarded by Bronco players, will now become a full-time FBS defensive coordinator and stay in the Mountain West.

New head coach Spencer Danielson on Tuesday confirmed Ioane will not be at Saturday's LA Bowl when Boise State squares off with UCLA at SoFi Stadium. Ron Collins will handle Ioane's duties this week and Danielson will continue to handle defensive coordinator responsibilities.

Danielson also told the media the Broncos' next offensive and defensive coordinators will be announced prior to the contest against the Bruins. He confirmed the majority of his current staff will be back in Boise for the 2024 campaign.

In his three seasons at Boise State, Ioane helped guide the program to a pair of appearances in the Mountain West title game. He also mentored standouts like JL Skinner, Tyreque Jones, Kekaula Kaniho, Seyi Oladipo and Alexander Teubner – who was named defensive MVP for his performance in the 44-20 win over UNLV.

Ioane, a native of Billings, started his career as linebackers coach at Montana State in 2005. He remained with the Bobcats for 12 seasons and served as the program's defensive coordinator in 2015. Ioane was a defensive analyst at Washington in 2017-2018, before returning to Montana State.

Ioane was a four-time All-American as student-athlete at Montana State from 2000 to 2003. He was inducted into the MSU Hall of Fame in 2014 and finished his college career as the Big Sky's all-time leader in tackles.
