Veolia: Tips for Idahoans to prevent frozen pipes

As temperatures begin to plummet in the Treasure Valley, Veolia reminds residents of the importance of protecting pipes from the freezing elements.

BOISE, Idaho — Winter is here; and as the cold weather settles into the Treasure Valley, freezing temperature are become and increasing threat to Idahoans' homesteads.

Idaho water provider, Veolia, is reminding customers of tips to prevent their water, pipes, plumbing and appliances from freezing this winter. 

"The cost to repair broken plumbing is higher than ever," said Veolia Vice President and General Manager of Idaho Marshall Thompson. "Winters can be hard on household plumbing, so it's important to take some time to protect pipes from the freezing weather."

"Plumbing located on outside walls, in basements, or in crawl spaces are particularly vulnerable to the cold."

Veolia shares a list f their top tips to help homeowners avoid costly repairs this chilly season.

Outside the home:

  • Disconnect and drain the garden hose connection
  • Blow out the sprinkler system
  • Close all outside vents, crawl spaces, and doors to prevent cold air coming in
  • Fix broken windows and seal cracks in the walls

Inside the home: 

  • Wrap water lines that are more apt to freezing in insulation or heat tape
  • Make sure water shutoff valves for the water line into the building is working properly
  • Keep a trickle of water running from the highest faucet during frigid temperatures 

If you won't be home: 

  • If gone for an extended period, keep a minimum amount of heat on in the house
  • If you plan to turn the heat off, drain all the water from the pipes, toilets and water heater. Turn off the power source to the water heater

If the pipes freeze:

  • It's important to clear blockages as soon as possible to minimize damage. It may be best to call a licensed plumber
  • If a water pipe has burst, turn off the water at the main shutoff valve in the house. Call Veolia for assistance: 208-362-7304
  • Open a nearby faucet slightly so the pipe can drain as it thaws
  • Do not use electrical appliances in the area of standing water
  • Never use hot water or a blowtorch on a frozen pipe or water meter
