The suspect is believed to have fatally shot himself, according to the Valley County Sheriff's Office.

CASCADE, Idaho — One man is dead after an hours-long standoff at a motel in Cascade Monday.

The situation at the Alpine Lodge on Cascade's Main Street started after midnight Monday morning, when deputies went to motel to arrest the man, who was wanted on warrants out of Washington.

The wanted man briefly opened his motel door and flashed a weapon when deputies arrived, according to the sheriff's office. As a safety precaution, deputies evacuated people near the hotel and set up a perimeter.

The sheriff's office called in the Idaho State Police SWAT team for help around 1:10 a.m.

At that time, investigators say, the man had barricaded himself inside his hotel room with a female hostage. The SWAT team spent hours negotiating with the standoff suspect, and he ultimately agreed to let the woman go. She was released unharmed, according to police.

ISP continued to talk with the suspect and tried to persuade him to come out and surrender to police. At one point, the SWAT team sprayed a "gas irritant" in an attempt to the room to get the man to leave.

The man still did not come out, so the SWAT team members opened the door to the motel room. At that point, according to the sheriff's office, the suspect was heard firing several shots.

None of the SWAT team members shot back at the man. After a period of time, those troopers went back into the room, and found the man dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
