Drone racers set to take to the sky in competition

There is a big drone competition taking place in a Nampa park on Saturday.

NAMPA — It's an adrenaline rush for those who may not consider themselves adrenaline junkies -- drone racing.

And here in the Treasure Valley, dozens have picked up the hobby, even competing in competitions!

It works like this: all competitors line up with their drones -- most of which are built from scratch -- and when the timer goes off, they all try and complete as many laps as possible in two minutes.

They'll compete in five heats, with the worst two heats dropped.

For the pilots, it's not just a fast-paced air race, it's a chance to see the city from a bird's-eye view.

"On these quads, there's a small camera right in the front that sends a video signal to our goggles, so when we fly, we're flying as if we're sitting in the cockpit of the drone," said Brent Merrick, Treasure Valley MultiGP. "It's high speed, it's full throttle and it's high KV."

This weekend's race is a qualifier for the regional tournament.

It will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Optimist Park in Nampa.

Competitors check in at 9 a.m., before a walk-through and practice.
