MANHATTAN, New York — A lower Manhattan courthouse is hosting a once-in-a-generation case where former President and presumptive Republican nominee Donald Trump faces 34 felony counts.
It's a first for any sitting or former United States President. His felony county stem back to 'hush money' payment Trump's lawyers paid adult actress Stormy Daniels ahead of the 2016 election. The Manhattan district attorney accuses Trump's actions of interfering with the 2016 election and mislabeling these payments on his taxes.
Idahoan Ximena Bustillo is now based in New York and covering the trial for NPR.
"So, it's a little bit of happenstance of right time, right place," Bustillo said. "[Trump] is very open to coming and talking at us when we're in the hall."
Upon leaving the courthouse Tuesday, Bustillo asked Trump where he was going.
"I'm going to a Bodega, but you know about that, right?" Trump said.
Though, he wouldn't tell Bustillo what he was ordering; Trump was headed to the convenience store for a campaign event.
"He is always reminding us that this is its own form of election interference. At least that's what he's alleging, because he cannot be traveling every day making all these other campaigns stops, because he does have to be in for Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday," Bustillo said. "The campaign is definitely a really big part of this trial."
The trial is scheduled to last 6 weeks. Bustillo expects the trial to take longer based on its unprecedented nature and her previous experience covering his civil trials.
The trial is still amid jury selection.
