POCATELLO, Idaho — Police in southern Idaho say three young children caused roughly $80,000 in damage by vandalizing a home before trying twice to burn it down.

The Idaho State Journal reports the children, ages 9, 12 and 13, have been charged in juvenile court with second-degree arson and malicious destruction of property.

Police said Lorraine Bowen was on vacation in Utah when the children broke into her home. The home reportedly had heavy damage from urine and paint, dishes and lamps and appliances were broken and furniture was destroyed. Police say the children tried to burn the home down to hide the vandalism, but the fires that were set in the bedroom and garage extinguished themselves.

According to police at least two of the children confessed at the encouragement of their parents.
