Police seek info on Boise man suspected of shooting, killing Ada County deputy

Dennis Mulqueen is suspected of shooting and killing Deputy Tobin Bolter Saturday night in Boise.

BOISE, Idaho — Police are asking the public for information on the Boise man who allegedly shot and killed an Ada County sheriff's deputy over the weekend.

The suspect, identified by the Ada County Coroner's Office on Tuesday as 65-year-old Dennis Mulqueen, was shot by police hours after officials said he shot Deputy Tobin Bolter Saturday night in Boise. Bolter died at the hospital Sunday morning.

The coroner said Mulqueen also died Sunday morning at Saint Alphonsus hospital from a gunshot wound of the chest.

The Boise Police Department released photos of the suspect on Tuesday, describing him as 5-foot-7, 135 pounds with blue eyes and brown hair. Police said Mulqueen was driving a gray 1999 GMC Yukon.

Detectives are asking anyone who had a personal contact with Mulqueen, or saw or interacted with him on Friday, April 19, or Saturday, April 20, to call police. Boise police said its working to learn more about Mulqueen and interactions he had before the shooting.

Those with information are asked to call Ada County Dispatch at 208-377-6790 and ask to speak with a Boise police detective.

The Ada County Sheriff's Office (ACSO) said the deputy had a vehicle pulled over near West Overland Road and North Raymond Street on April 20 just before 9 p.m. when the suspect in the vehicle shot the deputy in the neck and drove off.

Police said a witness saw the shooting and called 911 before performing CPR on the deputy, who was then taken to Saint Alphonsus. The suspect's vehicle was found near South Dorian and West Roosevelt streets around 9:30 p.m. but no one was inside, according to BPD.

Mulqueen was later shot and killed after a confrontation with officers nearby. In a news conference, police said although he did have a $3,000 warrant out for his arrest, they do not know why he shot the deputy. Police said he had a handgun in his possession.

Officers said they eventually located the suspect nearby on South Jackson Street outside a home and tried to get him to surrender.

A Code Red alert was sent to people living in the area, and Chief Winegar said officers also made personal contact with neighbors notify them as well.

Shortly after midnight, officers said the suspect opened fire on them, and a Boise police officer returned fire and shot him. He was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Gestures to honor Deputy Bolter began within hours of his death, with a police procession and flowers and candles laying outside the Ada County Sheriff's Office.

Several cities, counties and organizations have gathered to celebrate Bolter's life, with multiple candlelight vigils planned this week. A handful of entities are also raising funds for the Bolter family.
