Hector graduated from the College of Arts and Humanities at Fresno State University. During his time at Fresno State, he reported and anchored for Fresno State Focus, the university newscast. He was also a sports reporter for the university newspaper, The Collegian, and interned for the Mountain West Network and Fresno State Radio.

After Hector graduated, he made the trek through the redwood curtain and started his journalism career at Redwood News in Eureka, Calif. Aside from that, he helped start a Spanish newscast at Redwood News for both Del Norte and Humboldt Counties.
