Snow in the Boise Mountains

BOISE, Idaho — The mountains of Central Idaho are poised to get a significant amount of snow Thursday and Friday as a winter storm moves through the region.

Higher elevations around Sun Valley could see more than a foot of snow, according to KTVB meteorologist Larry Gebert. The McCall area has also gotten a decent amount of snowfall already, with more expected throughout the day.

Things will be a little wetter in the Treasure Valley, although the mountain areas will get some snow. Rain will hit the valley by about 5 p.m. Thursday, with that precipitation falling as snow higher up.

Bogus Basin could get two to three inches of snow Thursday, then three to four more on Friday, Gebert said.

The storm is also bringing strong winds, and additional windstorm damage is possible. The Boise area will see wind of up to about 29 mph, while gusts will hit 44mph in Twin Falls.

The Sawtooth Avalanche Center has issued avalanche warnings for mountain areas in Central Idaho, including the Soldier and Wood River Valley mountains as well as Galena Summit.

"Moderate to strong winds are blowing, and warming temperatures are expected today. The size and likelihood of both human-triggered and natural avalanches will continue to increase during the storm.
