First big snowfall in the Treasure Valley means slick roads for Monday morning commute

Wet roads are turning icy as temperatures drop overnight.

BOISE — Ada County Highway District snow plows were out in full force Sunday after heavy snowfall covered some parts of the Treasure Valley.

Because of warmer temperatures, roads were slushy for much of the day. But as temperatures drop, wet slushy roads are turning icy.

ACHD spokesperson Natalie Shaver said crews made every effort to remove slush from main roadways, and would continue to treat roads overnight with de-icing solution.

According to Idaho State Police, slick conditions caused several crashes and slide-offs between Nampa and Mountain Home. And late Sunday night, the I-184 Connector was closed due to icy conditions.

Shaver says clearing the slush was a top priority.

"Because right now what we are hearing from The National Weather Service is the temperatures are expected to drop so we want to make sure all of this is off the road, so it doesn't freeze over and create dangerous driving conditions," Shaver said.

Law enforcement is urging anyone who will be on the roads Monday morning to leave early and take it slow, giving other drivers plenty of space.

For some, Sunday's winter surprise was welcomed.

"Everybody being outside, it's fun," said Nick Hinrichsen of Boise. "Like everybody just throws away work and they just want to hang out. Go play in the snow, have a snowball fight, even people that don't want to be in the snow are in the snow."

Camel’s Back Park was packed with children sledding and enjoying the snow..

"I like to go to the top of Camels Back Mountain and slide all the way down, but I usually go backwards," said Ivy from Boise.

Adults had fun with the powder too.

"The first snow day of the year is getting out in the yard and building forts, building snowmen," said Gus Curry, of Boise. "Snow forts are protection from the enemy."
