Truck driver hurt in Payette County wreck

NEW PLYMOUTH, Idaho — Interstate 84 is back open after a crash involving a semi truck  in Payette County.

According to Idaho State Police dispatch, the crash happened at about 7 p.m. Wednesday about 10 miles from the Oregon border.

Police say 41-year-old Robert Smith of Portland, Oregon was headed east in a Freightliner semi when he drifted off the interstate onto the shoulder. 

Smith overcorrected, swerving across both lanes, the veered back toward the shoulder, tipping the semi over onto its side. 

The driver was taken by ambulance to St. Luke's in Nampa. HE was wearing a seatbelt, police say. 

The crash caused major backups for other drivers. The eastbound lanes were totally blocked for two hours. Responders were able to get one lane open, but the other remained blocked for an additional seven hours.
