Young will enter transfer portal; considers joining Boise State football program

Boise State guard Kobe Young will enter the transfer portal and entertain the idea of joining the Bronco football team, he confirmed to KTVB on Tuesday.

BOISE, Idaho — Boise State sophomore guard Kobe Young will enter the transfer portal and entertain the idea of joining the Bronco football team, he confirmed to KTVB on Tuesday.

Young still wants to pursue playing college basketball, but if the Boise State football program has a spot for him, he would consider staying in Boise, a place he really enjoys living. Young was seen at spring practice last week observing from the sideline.

Young was a three-star wide receiver at Chiawana High School in Pasco, Washington. He had scholarship offers from Army and Central Washington, along with a number of preferred walk-on opportunities, including one at Washington.

He burst on to the scene for the Riverhawks football team as a sophomore in 2019, earning First Team All-Mid-Columbia Conference honors. A broken foot then derailed a promising junior season, and a global pandemic effected his senior season.

Along the way, Young – who is now listed at 6-foot-7, 208 pounds – received a scholarship offer to play basketball at Boise State, and he committed prior to his senior season. He also had scholarship offers to play basketball at UC San Diego and Idaho State.

Young redshirted his initial season at Boise State. He then appeared in 27 games as a reserve during the 2022-23 campaign, averaging 1.4 points and 1.7 rebounds in 8.2 minutes per game.

Expecting his role to grow this past season, Young's playing time dipped to just 4.1 minutes per game. He appeared in 25 of 33 contests and averaged 1.1 points and 1.1 rebounds.

Young is the third Bronco to enter the transfer portal in the past week, joining sophomore guard Jace Whiting and redshirt freshman walk-on Kade Rice, the youngest son of Leon Rice.

Young's departure leaves Boise State with three available scholarships.
