Idaho women's basketball claims Big Sky title despite losing on Senior Day

The Vandals claimed the season title outright even though they lost to Idaho State. It is the program's first title since 1985.

MOSCOW, Idaho — Idaho women's basketball won the Big Sky regular season championship outright despite losing on Senior Day to Idaho State 73-67 on Saturday in the Kibble Dome.

The Vandals found themselves down by as many as 12 in the third quarter, but they stormed back. Seniors Mikayla Ferenz and Taylor Pierce were joined by Gina Marxen to lead the charge.

Idaho would get as close as one point with just under two minutes to go, but Idaho State hit some big free throws to pull away.

Ferenz finished with 23 points, Pierce added 20 and Marxen had 10.

Even though the Vandals lost, because Northern Colorado lost, Idaho finished a game above every other team in the Big Sky standings to give them the regular season title.

It's the program's first regular season title since 1985.

That means they will also be the one seed in the Big Sky Tournament. The Vandals play again on Tuesday in that tournament against the winner of Southern Utah and Sacramento State.
