Chad Daybell trial day 1: Jury selection

Chad Daybell is facing the death penalty for the deaths of his ex-wife Tammy Daybell, and Lori Vallow's two children Tylee Ryan and JJ Vallow.

BOISE, Idaho — The trial of Chad Daybell begins on Monday, starting with jury selection for this case. The state will be assigning 18 jurors to the case, 6 of those will be alternates, determined at a later date. 

Chad Daybell is facing three counts of first degree murder for the deaths of his ex-wife Tammy Daybell, and Lori Vallow's two children, Tylee Ryan and JJ Vallow. Chad Daybell is also facing conspiracy charges, as well as insurance fraud following Tammy Daybell's death.

6:05 p.m.: Court adjourns for the day.

5:18 p.m.: Court is expected to last until 6 p.m. to get through two panels of prospective jurors. John Prior is asking questions to jurors. 

5:06 p.m.: Jurors continue to be called back to the courtroom one-by-one. 

4:22 p.m.: Judge Boyce is moving on to individual voir dire 

4:17 p.m.: Judge Boyce, prosecution, and defense are gathering out of the courtroom for a sidebar conversation. 

4:10 p.m.: Defense has taken over questioning

3:42 p.m.: Judge Boyce concludes his voir dire, handing it to the prosecution to begin their questioning of jury prospects. 

3:16 p.m.: 16 jurors have been impaneled 

3:07 p.m.: Judge Boyce calls in a new group of jurors for introductions and questioning. 

3:00 p.m.: Judge Boyce calls court back to session, prosecution making comments. 

2:12 p.m.: Judge Boyce calls for lunch, court is in recess. 

2:09 p.m.: Judge Boyce calls court back to session, relays statements regarding jury selection. They have selected several jurors and will question smaller groups throughout the week, until they get to the number of jurors necessary. 

1:59 p.m.: Judge Boyce clears the courtroom, starting starting a recess. 

12:45 p.m.: Voir dire continues with jury members. 

12:00 p.m.: Individual jury members continue being brought into the courtroom for questioning. 

11:28 a.m.: Judge Boyce is asking jury members questions regarding their ability and availability for trial. 

11:20 a.m.: Court is back from recess, John Prior continues questioning the jury. 

10:57 a.m.: Court is in a short recess for 20 minute.

10:32 a.m.: Defense attorney John Prior begins questioning jury regarding ability to serve. 

9:44 a.m.: Judge Boyce explains to potential jurors that Daybell was charged in amended indictment of conspiring to commit crime w/ Alex Cox and Lori Vallow Daybell. He tells them not to speculate as to any other case or legal proceeding involving alleged co-conspirators.

9:32 a.m.: Court is called to session

9:26 a.m.: Judge Boyce just arrived. There are 4 members on the prosecution team. John Prior is the only attorney representing Daybell. Boyce says 16 jurors will be brought in at a time for voir dire. They need to get to 50 jurors & each side gets 16 peremptory challenges.
