Hazardous fire causing delays on I-84 in eastern Oregon

The Oregon Department of Transportation shut down the westbound lanes of Interstate 84 in eastern Oregon after a semi truck carrying hazardous materials caught fire near Pendleton (milepost 207) Thursday morning.

The Oregon Department of Transportation shut down the westbound lanes of Interstate 84 in eastern Oregon after a semi truck carrying hazardous materials caught fire near Pendleton (milepost 207) Thursday morning.

Oregon State Police and a Hazmat team from Hermiston are on scene. The Pendleton Fire Department has issued a shelter in place notification within 1/2 mile of the fire.

ODOT spokesman Tom Strandberg says the truck is carrying cleaning compound, food flavor and Bic lighters. He says the fire was reported around 9 a.m.

Originally, ODOT closed westbound I-84 and was diverting traffic at exit 210 in Pendleton. However, the closure has since been moved to Baker City at exit 302 due to limited truck parking.

At 12:49 p.m. Pacific Time, ODOT sent out an update that one westbound lane of the interstate was back open and that delays were under 20 minutes.

The eastbound lanes of I-84 are open.
