VERIFY: Does Idaho have stricter Star Card requirements than other states?

The Idaho Transportation Department says all states require the same documents.

BOISE, Idaho — We've been getting a lot of questions surrounding the Star Card, which you'll need to have if you hope to board a flight after October 2020.

Viewers have asked if the requirements for obtaining the card are more stringent in Idaho than they are in surrounding states.

The Star Card is an optional driver's license that adds a star that shows it's in compliance with federal security standards.

However, beginning October 1, 2020, you will need a Star Card, a U.S. passport, military identification or some other form of federally accepted ID to board a flight or access a federal building.

We asked the Idaho Transportation Department about getting a Star Card. Spokeswoman Jennifer Gonzalez says all states require the same documents.

“Requirements for Idaho's REAL ID, the Star Card, are federal requirements, so what you're going to be asked for in Idaho are the same requirements of what you're going to be asked in California, in Oregon, in other neighboring states as well as across the country," Gonzalez said.

We can VERIFY that Idaho's rules when it comes to getting a Star Card are the same as states across the nation.

So, what do you need to bring with you when applying for the card?

Three documents:

  • One that establishes your identity, such as a birth certificate or a valid passport. Note: If you have changed your name since birth, you will need documentation of that as well - such as a marriage license.
  • You'll also need your Social Security card or a W-2 form.
  • And two documents that provide proof of residency, such as a lease or rental agreement, a mortgage deed or a public utility bill with your name and address.

All documents must be originals. No photocopies will be accepted.
