Vandal paints makeshift parking spaces in downtown Meridian

A section of road on Idaho Avenue was recently resurfaced by the highway district and left unpainted.

MERIDIAN — Some additional parking spaces have been added in downtown Meridian, but the city says it's the work of a vandal.

The strip of road on Idaho Avenue between Main and 2nd streets was recently resurfaced by the Ada County Highway District and left unpainted until the city decided if parking spots would be parallel or diagonal.

But before Meridian could make the decision, the culprit took matters into their own hands.

This is the work of the vandal, the lines are a bit crooked and they don't all connect, but it would be easy to mistake these parking spaces as legitimate.

A woman who works in one of the storefronts says cars have been parking here ever since the lines were painted a couple weeks ago.

According to ACHD, a police report has not been filed. They repaved and fog sealed this section of road back in June.

"So we left this area just black because the city hadn't decided what kind of parking they wanted," said ACHD spokesperson Natalie Shaver. "So they weren't sure if they wanted parallel parking or diagonal parking, so we were just leaving that space black until they had a decision. That was back in June. Fast forward to now, we have somebody going in and spray-painting, hand-painting these diagonal parking spaces. So what we are doing is hoping to get this done sometime this week, is going back and fog sealing again to cover up these hand-painted parking spaces."

At this time it's unclear when the city of Meridian will make a decision on what type of parking this strip of road will be.

There are now orange cones up on the street warning drivers not to park there.
