The Salvation Army celebrates National Donut Day

It is an annual event that dates back to World War I.

BOISE, Idaho — It's National Donut Day.

And to celebrate, The Salvation Army served Krispy Kreme donuts to its veterans at the Boise VA Hospital.

Throughout the day, the iconic Salvation Army red kettles will be at Guru Donuts, Pastry Perfection, Sweet Sensations Doughnuts, and Boise DK Donuts.

All of the donations help provide food to those in need in Ada County.

“A lot of people are really grateful were here, they recognize us, they are really happy to see us," said Amanda Coulter with The Salvation Army.

National Donut Day goes back to World War I when women volunteers brought soldiers stationary to write home, sewing services, coffee and donuts -- giving them the nickname of 'donut lassies.'

National Donut Day was established 20 years later in 1938 by the Chicago Salvation Army as a fundraiser for food and other supplies during the Great Depression.

To this day it is still celebrated as a way to serve those in need.
