Roads remain closed near Boise State after water main break, sinkhole

It's the second time in less than a year that a water main break has caused a sinkhole in this exact same spot.

BOISE — Roads remain closed after a water main break near the Boise State Student Union Building flooded several streets and caused a sinkhole Sunday evening.

The water main break and resulting sinkhole that opened up near the intersection of University Drive and Lincoln Street is in the same spot as one that partially swallowed a fire truck back in October.

A Boise police officer on scene told a KTVB photographer that this was the fourth such incident in the same location in recent years.

The Boise Fire Department posted a photo on Twitter showing a flooded road next to one of the university's parking garages.

Crews from Suez Water managed to shut the water off to the main Sunday night. Lincoln Street south of University Drive, University west of Lincoln and University at Joyce are all shut down.

Although Ada County Dispatch told KTVB the roads had reopened by 6:45 a.m., that is not correct, according to Boise State officials. The shutdown is expected to last several days.

Squires said that there were no major impacts to students on campus. The university is currently on summer break, but there are some summer classes underway.
