Early morning traffic stop results in driver being shot, killed by police

An Idaho State Police trooper and Idaho Falls police officers were involved in the fatal shooting of a 34-year-old man Monday morning.

IDAHO FALLS, Idaho — A 34-year-old man was shot and killed by police Monday morning after being pulled over for a traffic violation and shooting at officers, according to Idaho State Police.

An Idaho State Police trooper pulled the vehicle over at 1:09 a.m. Monday near the Candlewood Suites Hotel in Idaho Falls. While conducting the stop, the trooper decided to request additional assistance from nearby officers.

As Idaho Falls Police Department (IFPD) officers arrived, the trooper informed the arriving officers that "a male passenger fired at them" before running away from the vehicle, ISP stated in a news release.

The trooper and IFPD officers then chased the man on foot, eventually ending near a car dealership on the corner of Pancheri Drive and Yellowstone Highway.

ISP said that during the pursuit, officers exchanged gunfire with the man - which is believed to be when the man was shot by one of the officers. An investigation is ongoing into the exact circumstances of the incident, according to ISP.

The release stated that law enforcement provided emergency medical aid to the man.  However, he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police said the deceased man's identity will be released pending notification of next of kin.

No law enforcement officers were injured during the incident.

The Bingham County Sheriff's Office and Eastern Idaho Critical Incident Task Force (EICITF) are investigating the incident. IFPD and Idaho State Police will not be involved in the investigation.
