Meridian School District discusses possible high school boundaries

MERIDIAN -- The Meridian School District is looking to change where students attend high school. Tuesday, we went to the first of many meetings to address changing enrollment boundary lines.

Nearly 60 parents came to the meeting. Meridian School District officials told those who attended the meeting that enrollment at the five district high schools is uneven. Rocky Mountain High School and Mountain View High School have over 2,000 students and use portable classrooms while Meridian High School and Centennial High School see enrollment numbers far less than that.

At the rate the district was growing many thought a new high school would be built by now evening out the boundaries, but in today s world enrollment numbers have changed.

It s just simply out of balance and that creates issues, not the least of which at this school (Rocky Mountain High School) is still going to grow, but we don t have any way to relieve that growth and it s a little hard to relieve that growth and justify building a new high school when you have one that has 800 empty seats, said Meridian School District spokesman Eric Exline.

If a child ends up going to another school, taxes will not change because of new boundaries.

A committee to address the boundaries will be formed and then in February a proposal will be presented to the school board.
