BOISE, Idaho — The Idaho Transportation Department reports that Idaho 21 remains closed between Lowman and Stanley due to a massive avalanche that is blocking the road.

ITD posted a photo of the giant avalanche to its Twitter page Monday morning.

The slide is 40-feet deep and one-quarter of a mile long.

Highway 21 has been closed since Sunday, Feb. 24.

ITD spokesman Jake Melder says the avalanche danger in the area remains high. Avalanche control work is in progress. Crews have been dropping explosives from a helicopter to test the stability of some areas before sending in crews to remove the snow.

No word yet on when the highway will reopen to traffic. Melder says more storms are in the forecast for mid-week.

Melder says people need to respect the closure signs and stay away.

There is some good news to report. Highway 75 over Galena Summit was reopened to traffic on Saturday, so people do have a way of getting in and out of Stanley.
