University of Idaho Law in Boise honors 4 students killed one year ago

Several dozen people shined a light and took a moment of silence on Monday night to remember.

BOISE, Idaho — Far from Moscow but always part of the Vandal family, dozens of University of Idaho Boise students and alumni gathered Monday evening to honor the lives of Ethan Chapin, Xana Kernodle, Madison Mogen and Kaylee Goncalves.

About 40 people shined a light and took a moment of silence to remember what happened one year ago, on Nov. 13, 2022, when the four students were murdered in a house just off the Moscow campus.

"I remember when the news broke about it, and it was really hard to hear," said Julie Attinger, College of Law student. "I was thinking of all my friends up in Moscow, hoping that they were okay, praying for their safety, praying for the four students’ families."

Alumni Dennis Cain also remembers the day vividly.

"I think most people like us, we think about it all the time," he said. "So, to come out and commemorate this on the one-year anniversary just felt like something we really wanted to do.”

The U of I College of Law in Boise organized Monday's student-led event in coordination with the Moscow vigil. Law student Julie Attinger said seeing everyone come together —around the state — meant a lot.

She said the vigils exemplify the strength of the Vandal family even amid tragedy.

"Being a Vandal goes beyond just your four years in college," Attinger said. "And you know, the years after that, it's a lifetime thing, and we're always here for each other. So, to see that tonight was really important."

Law student Julie Chuckovich said she thinks U of I Boise will likely continue honoring the four students for years to come.
