Kuna teacher and students plan to make survival kits for students in need

For many the start of the school year is exciting, with back-to-school shopping and new supplies, but for some it's a very stressful time. Kelly Adams, a Kuna Middle School teacher, and Honor Society students are stepping up to help.

KUNA — It's hard to believe it's that time of year again, the school year will be kicking off in just a few short weeks.

For many it's an exciting time with back to school shopping and new supplies, but for some people who struggle to make ends meet it's an extremely difficult time.

Kelly Adams, a Kuna Middle School teacher, and Honor Society students decided they would pitch in and help out.

With the help of some grant money they're hoping to put together around 24 survival kits for students who are living in some sort of temporary housing like foster care.

Inside the packs there will be shirts, socks and snacks that will last them through the first week of school.

Adams says all of the supplies that will go into the survival kits will arrive in a couple of weeks.

"We know that they don't always have a new backpack and they don't always have a backpack at all," Adams said. "It's hard for them when they're struggling at home to come to school and learn and be upbeat. They really need the extra attention and they need to know that somebody cares."

The grant was for $590 and that covers most of what will go inside the kits. What it doesn't cover, and what Adams is asking your help for, are the backpacks to put everything in, and toiletries.

Once the kits are made, Adams says they will be dropped off at the Community Resource Center and they will distribute them to the kids who need it the most. That way, it's discreet and direct.

You can make a monetary donation by visiting DonorsChoose.org, or you can call the school at (208) 922-1002 if you'd like to drop off a backpack or other supplies.
