Knights of Columbus closes its Meridian location

The organization has been donating medical supplies to families in need for free since 2002.

NAMPA, Idaho — Medical supplies for families in need can be a huge expense, especially for families who are already dealing with doctor visits and medical bills.

That's why the Knights of Columbus in Meridian has been such a valuable service for families across the Treasure Valley. The organization loans medical supplies to families in need for free.

But KTVB has learned the Meridian location closed its doors last month because of the owner's health and his retirement.

However, there's still another branch where folks can get help.

“We try to do a lot of good for anybody, we don't ask any questions when they come here,” Knights of Columbus Help Program Manager Tom Sweet said.

Although the Meridian location is closed, the Nampa location is still open and available to everyone.

“We loan it out for six months and if you need it longer than that we give you an extension,” Sweet said. “If we've got it, we'll let you have it.”

It's a resource Debra Lackey used when she was looking for a wheelchair for her mom.

“Knights of Columbus lets you borrow it for as long as you need for no charge, and they're wonderful for that,” Lackey said.

Her mom passed away in July, but she now shows her appreciation for the organization by donating items that others might need, like extra walkers.

She’s not the only who has appreciated their services.

On Thursday, social worker Marya Burns searched for a wheelchair for one of her clients at the Nampa branch.

“These kinds of resources are invaluable in order to help people stay living at home independently and in a safe manner,” Burns said.

Now that the Meridian location is no longer open for business, the Nampa location expects to be even busier.

But they need some help.

Right now, there's only three volunteers running the health equipment loan program, and on top of that they're now receiving extra medical equipment from the other location. But they don’t mind as long as they continue to help those I need.

“You can get money, and money can make you happy, but helping these people can make you happier,” Sweet said.

The Nampa location is located at 2900 E. Railroad Street and is open from 1-4 p.m. on Thursdays.
