Idaho wind farms want to sell energy credits

TWIN FALLS, Idaho-- A company representing eight wind farms in south-central Idaho wants to sell renewable energy credits to California utilities while retaining the energy produced by the

wind farms.

Idaho Winds LLC petitioned the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission Dec. 15 to approve the plan that involves selling wind energy and related renewable energy credits to a third party.

Idaho Winds would then buy the power back, leaving the third party to sell the renewable energy credits to a California utility.

The Times-News reports that the deal relies on California energy policy requiring that renewable energy sources provide some of the state's energy needs.

The credits can't be sold in Idaho because the state doesn't have such a requirement.

Barbara Connors is a spokeswoman for the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission. She says the company's plan is a unique, but a lot of things have yet to be tried in the renewable energy industry.
