As R. Kelly’s former wife, Drea Kelly’s battle with domestic violence was well-known. But her personal journey with such abuse started when she was very young.
“My grandfather was a Baptist preacher, but he was also the first man that I ever saw beat a woman,” says Kelly. “We’re being conditioned as children – especially little girls – that men and boys show us love through violence. If he was pulling my hair and he liked me when I was little, certainly he loves me when he is pulling my hair now.”
