Police say the woman had life-threatening injuries and was airlifted to a different hospital for treatment.

ONTARIO, Oregon — The Ontario Police Department is investigating a stabbing that happened at the Saint Alphonsus Medical Center in Ontario early Friday morning.

Investigators say they received reports of a woman with life-threatening injuries from a stabbing at 12:38 a.m. Friday.

When police arrived at the hospital, they found a 28-year-old woman with multiple stab wounds in the emergency room, according to police. Officials determined the stabbing happened at the hospital and the suspect had already fled the scene.

Hospital staff was able to provide immediate medical care to the victim, but the woman was airlifted to a nearby hospital for further treatment, police say.

The suspect, 28-year-old Ramiro Garcia, was later found by police and was taken into custody. He was booked into the Malheur County Jail on charges of attempted murder, criminal mischief in the first degree, harassment and assault. He will be arraigned Monday afternoon.

Ontario Police say the initial investigation found that the suspect and victim are family members, but the police department did not explain how exactly the man and woman are related.

Police ask anyone with further information about the stabbing call the Ontario Police Department at 541-473-5125.
