Deputy driving 115 mph in deadly crash
12-30 Payette County Crash

NEW PLYMOUTH -- New details emerged Friday in the investigation of a deadly accident involving a Payette County Deputy.

The accident happened October 18th, 2011 on Highway 30 in New Plymouth.

Idaho State Police detectives wrapped up the investigation earlier this week, handing it over to prosecutors to review.

The accident happened around 5:30 p.m. when 65 year old Barry Johnson was turning into his driveway. That's when Payette County Deputy Scott Sloan hit Johnson's jeep.

The collision threw Johnson from his jeep. He died on the scene.

Deputy Sloan was driving to a 911 call about an intruder inside a home. His lights and sirens were on at the time of the accident.

The ISP investigation revealed that Sloan was driving 115 miles per hour at the time of the crash. The posted speed limit is 55.

As for Johnson, blood tests reveal his blood alcohol level was .08. That meets the threshold for being under the influence.

Gem County will now review ISP s findings to determine if Deputy Sloan was driving too fast for the situation. The County Prosecutor is out of town this week and will review ISP's findings next week.

Gem County is handling the case, instead of Payette County, to avoid a conflict of interest.
