Cooling station opens in Boise for homeless

The homeless have a place to go during the day to get out of the summer heat.

BOISE — It's supposed to be 107 degrees in Boise by the end of the week, which is dangerous for everyone. The homeless are especially vulnerable, which is why the Boise Rescue Mission has opened up it's River of Life building during the day.

The shelter is open for men, women and children. Jacob Lang is the River of Life Men's Ministry Director. He says once the temperature gets around 90 degrees the shelter opens up during the day, in addition to the regular night hours.

"It's just been so hot we've had to open it up," said Lang. "With the next couple of days going to be over 100 degrees we're going to need to be open for the homeless population to have a place to relax and be cool."

The shelter, located on 13th and River streets in Boise, also provides water and food to those who need it. It is powered by donations from the community.

Corpus Christi also offers day shelter for the homeless, however, it is closed until August 18 for annual repairs. The City of Boise has a cooling station called the Pioneer Neighborhood Community Center during the afternoons on weekends for women and children.
