Governor Little orders flags to half-staff honoring deputy killed in line of duty

Ada County Sheriff's Deputy Tobin Bolter was shot and killed during a traffic stop.

BOISE, Idaho — Idaho Governor Brad Little has ordered U.S. and Idaho State flags to be lowered to half-staff to honor Ada County Sheriff's Deputy Tobin Bolter, who was shot and killed in the line of duty.

"Our hearts break for the family, loved ones, and law enforcement colleagues of Deputy Tobin Bolter. Day in and day out, our brave men and women in blue put themselves in harm's way to protect us and keep our communities safe. Idaho is grieving this devastating loss," Governor Brad Little said.

Bolter is the first Ada County Sheriff's deputy to be killed in the line of duty in the office's history.

Boise Mayor Lauren McLean also issued a statement:

"I grieve for the family of Deputy Tobin Bolter," said Mayor Lauren McLean. "And I stand with the members of the Ada County Sheriff's department, Boise Police Department, and all those who work in law enforcement who feel this loss acutely as they put their lives on the line daily to protect our community."

The Board of Ada County Commissioners, Chairman Rod Beck, Commissioner Ryan Davidson and Commissioner Tom Dayley, issued a statement sharing their condolences:

"Ada County employs approximately 2100 people, more than 800 of whom work for the Ada County Sheriff’s Office. We are all part of the same family and this young deputy’s needless and tragic death affects each and every one of us. We send our love and support to the deputy’s family, Ada County Sheriff Matt Clifford and every law enforcement officer who protects our community each day. We will be flying the American flag at half mast until the deputy’s service."

The governor said the flags would remain at half-staff until the day after Bolter's memorial service. A date for that service has yet to be set.
