CALDWELL -- Canyon County Commissioners in southwest Idaho have approved spending $245,000 for a study involving inmate housing and overcrowding at the county jail.

The Idaho Press Tribune reports that commissioners on Friday approved the contract with DLR Group to conduct the study.

The study will try to answer how long the current jail can be used, how much a new jail would cost, and how the existing jail could be renovated.

The jail has had overcrowding problems for years that led to a lawsuit and a federal consent decree in 2016 requiring the county to fix overcrowding and unsanitary jail conditions.

The county has spent $308,000 trying to take care of those problems.
