Boise revises child care website after complaints

Nearly 80 percent of Boise child cares received a poor rating on the website.
The City of Boise's new child care website.

BOISE – The City of Boise announced today that it has revised a new website that rates child care facilities in the Capital City. The decision comes a day after KTVB aired a story which showed the ratings painted a dismal picture of child care in Boise.

Nearly 80 percent of child care facilities in Boise received a poor rating on the website.

Day care operators argued the ratings were not accurate.

Theresia Muli, the owner of Born to Succeed, says nobody from the city visited her facility before the ratings were released.

The website was created as part of Boise's Healthy Childcare initiative that was launched during the summer. Child care providers are ranked online according to their compliance in areas that include physical activity, nutrition and limited screen time.

The city announced the website is being updated to better reflect the day care's level of participation in the voluntary program. Day cares that had not provided full information about their child care operations received a poor rating. Changes to the website will now show those day cares as "not yet rated."

"We remain committed to the premise that parents should be aware of the level of care their children will receive in the city's day cares, as it relates to health," said City Councilman TJ Thomson in a statement. "We greatly appreciate the feedback we've received regarding the website's launch and are adjusting as is appropriate."

Licensed child care providers will now have an extension for submitting their information for the website until April 30. Until then, those facilities that have not submitted documentation will have no rating on the website.
