BOISE, Idaho — A land exchange agreement with the Capital City Development Corporation and a $5 million CapEd donation are making the YMCA's $80 million revitalization project in downtown Boise a reality.

In a surprise announcement on Wednesday, Treasure Valley YMCA CEO David Duro announced that the organization has entered a new partnership with CapEd Credit Union in what he called a "partner-rich ecosystem that will address every significant need in our community."

To honor the newfound collaboration and CapEd donation of $5 million, the YMCA intends to name the new 109,000-square-foot building "The CapEd Downtown Boise YMCA."

Duro said the journey to a new downtown Boise YMCA facility began in 2017 when the organization was quoted an estimated $20 million for building repairs.

"With the support of partners like CapEd, the downtown Boise YMCA will not only be a state-of-the-art facility, but - building on our rich 130-year history - will be a beacon of hope and opportunity for generations to come," Duro said.

The Capital City Development Corporation (CCDC) is also playing a role in the downtown YMCA new-build project.

In July 2022, the CCDC Board of Commissioners approved a land exchange with the Treasure Valley YMCA. According to the agreement, the YMCA will obtain property on North 10th Street, adjacent to the existing YMCA.

In exchange, the CCDC will obtain two parcels from the YMCA property on North 11th Street and West State Street, which are slated for a new residential building, according to the CCDC's website.

Duro said the YMCA hub will boast unique features and community programs in addition to the YMCA's usual amenities.

In Wednesday's announcement, Duro said along with a gym and swimming pool, the new development will have a "Thrive Center," which he said is designed to help families with special-needs children. The downtown YMCA will have designated spaces for teens, a teaching kitchen, a "mindfulness studio" and a designated area for what Duro called "an intergenerational space," intended to "bring the oldest among us and the youngest among us together."

In addition to 577 parking spaces for YMCA guests, the new building will boast a child development center with 121 spots available for parents. The Boise location will also be staffed with a medical provider and higher education specialist.
