COUNCIL, Idaho — The Idaho Transportation Department has taken down signs along Highway 95, between New Meadows and Council, that they posted earlier this week. The signs incorrectly stated that the highway was completely closed and drivers had to take alternate routes.
Instead, just less than a mile of the stretch has been reduced to one lane as crews work on a routine bridge reconstruction project.
ITD spokesperson Jennifer Gonzalez tells KTVB that the signs went up prematurely.
"In the future there will be overnight closures required on this bridge - the Weiser River Bridge - which is located on [Highway] 95, and signs went up about that," Gonzalez said. "However the signs went up too soon."
The partial lane closure will last until November and the only restriction is vehicle width limits of 12 feet, according to the Washington County Sheriff's Office Facebook page.
KTVB contacted ITD about the signs stating the highway was closed. Soon after, road crews began covering up the signs.
Gonzalez said the signs will be back in place - and public notice will be given - before the highway is completely closed for the bridge work.
