Boise State hosts Idaho Indian education summit

Educators, policymakers and tribal leaders worked together Wednesday to promote equity and best practices for teaching American Indian students in Idaho.

BOISE — Boise State University served as host for the third stop of the 2018 Idaho Indian Education Summit on Wednesday.

The summit is aimed to increase and promote American Indian cultural understanding inside the classroom.

More than 100 educators, policymakers and tribal leaders are working today to promote and learn about equity and best practices for teaching American Indian students.

Event leaders say the goal is to do that by identifying positive strategies and gathering cultural knowledge to share in the classroom.

"Indian education in Idaho is beginning to make great strides and we need to infuse our curriculum our policies and our rules and our decision making with indigenous knowledge that we gain today," said Johanna Jones, Coordinator, Idaho State Indian Education Department.

Another big goal at the summit today was to infuse Idaho education with cultural knowledge and understanding to benefit all students.

The daylong summit featured interactive sessions for educators as well as a panel of American Indian college students who shared their experiences about the transition from high school to higher education.
