Thief caught with his pants down while stealing a package in Meridian

The thief couldn't make a clean getaway as his pants came loose when he sprinted away with the stolen package.

The rise of online shopping and its convenience are giving thieves an advantage and new opportunities.

Dustin Parker of Meridian just caught a thief that stole a package from his porch on camera with his doorbell cam, early Sunday morning.

"Kind of spooky, makes you feel like maybe you weren't as safe as you thought you were," said Parker.

Parker had just ordered a gift online for his daughter.

"My wife and I just ordered a blanket for my daughter, we are moving her into her big girl bed," Parker said.

The package was delivered Saturday afternoon when Parker and his wife weren't home.

"Then Sunday afternoon my wife was checking her email and saw that it had gotten delivered," Parker said. "We checked the front doorstep and it wasn't there and that's what triggered us to look at our camera."

The footage shows a dark-colored SUV or van drive past Parker's house then reverse back into the front it.

A man then runs up to Parker's door, swipes his package and almost loses his pants as he sprints off.

"It's kind of scary, I mean at least they didn't break into the house but still to think a stranger took it from you and was on your front doorstep," said Parker.

Parker alerted authorities who are hoping someone may recognize the culprit.

Police are warning residents to beware of "porch pirates," who are stealing packages right off people's doorsteps.

According to Boise Police, there have been more than a dozen reports of package theft since November.

"We do get people that will follow the mail truck, follow the UPS and FedEx truck around and try to get to the package before you get to it," said Ed Fritz with the Boise Police Department.

Police recommend having packages be delivered to the workplace instead of your home, asking neighbors to keep an eye out for your deliveries and leaving instructions for the deliverer.

"Consider a signature on there, that way someone has to be home to sign for it or just ship it to the shipping facility instead, so you have to go to the post office of the FedEx office to physically pick it up," said Fritz.
