Stranded kayaker rescued then arrested

A spokesperson for the Latah County Sheriff's Office says a rescue led to the arrest of a wanted man out of Ada County Saturday.

LATAH COUNTY -- A rescue along the Potlatch River in north Idaho led to the arrest of a Fruitland man on Saturday.

A spokesperson for the Latah County Sheriff's Office says authorities were called in to search for a missing kayaker after he didn't show up at a take out point on Friday.

The man had been kayaking with a friend who had hit a logjam earlier in the day and lost his kayak when it became submerged. That man was able to get to shore safely.

He eventually called authorities after he was unable to find his kayaking partner who had successfully avoided the logjam.

Two Bear Air Rescue based in Montana was brought in during the early morning hours Saturday to search for the missing man. The rescue team is funded by a private donor and helps with search and rescue operations in Montana and Idaho.

Using their helicopter and infrared technology, the Two Bear Air Rescue team searched the river and steep canyon wall for any sign of the missing kayaker, but after several passes came up empty.

"It had been raining all night... that's really slick moss," said Chief Pilot Jim Pierce. "Pretty tough access."

Then, during another search of the area, the three-member team spotted something. It was the missing kayaker huddled in the moss.

"He had said that the reason that we hadn't seen him earlier was that he'd been sleeping inside of his kayak which was under a heavy canopy of timber," added Pierce.

One member of the air rescue team dropped down to help the stranded man. Video from the Two Bear Air Rescue team shows both of them being hoisted back up to the helicopter safely.

But that isn't the end of the story. The man who was rescued, identified by sheriff's officials as 29-year-old Jonathan Wyble of Fruitland, was then hauled off to jail.

A spokesperson for the Latah County Sheriff's Office says a run of Wyble's name showed he was wanted on a felony arrest warrant out of Ada County for forgery of evidence.

Wyble was booked into the Latah County Jail Saturday morning after spending the night along the Potlatch River.

According to a spokesman for the Ada County Sheriff's Office, the warrant for Wyble's arrest was issued in October in connection with a Boise Police Department case. There is a $50,000 bond attached.
