The trial for a Mountain Home man accused of stabbing his landlady to death in 2017 began this week.

Scott Riggs is charged with first-degree murder in the death of 71-year-old Paula Febrache. Febrache's body was found in the trunk of her own car Aug. 26, 2017, the day after her husband reported her missing to police.

Riggs rented a home from Febrache, and the two had worked together at the Walmart in Mountain Home. The suspect has pleaded not guilty to killing her, telling detectives that Febrache gave him a ride in her car the day she went missing, but he did not see her again.

But police say they have evidence implicating Riggs in the murder: His palm print was found on the trunk of the victim's car, and traces of Febrache's blood were discovered in his truck, according to an Idaho State Police investigator.

In addition, a pawn shop employee has testified to selling Riggs the knife used in the murder before Febrache was killed.

If convicted, Riggs could face up to life in prison.

The trial began Tuesday with jury selection.
