Sports Authority to close all remaining stores

Sports Authority store in Boise

Once the nation's largest sporting goods retailer, Sports Authority will close all of its 450 stores nationwide after it failed to find a buyer for them.

It's a big change a big change from March, when the Colorado-based company announced Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection and said it would close 140 stores in an effort to stop total liquidation of the company's assets.

But the retailer could not reach an agreement with lenders and creditors on a reorganization plan, the Denver Business Journal reports.

Sports Authority was bought by a hedge fund 10 years ago, but it has struggled with the high debt associated with that buyout.

It also has been overtaken by the higher-end Dick's Sporting Goods and faced pressure from Amazon and websites from major sports leagues.

The company operates four Idaho stores - in Boise, Idaho Falls, Lewiston, and Coeur d'Alene. A manager at the Boise store declined to comment on the closure.

Liquidation sales will reportedly start around May 25 and are expected to run until the end of August.
